Healthcare Literacy

Who is on the healthcare teamAttendings, residents, fellows, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, therapists, pharmacists, case managers, and advocates each have distinct roles.

Common abbreviationsNPO means nothing by mouth. PRN means as needed. BID means twice a day. Rx is a prescription. Hx is history. Dx is diagnosis. Tx is treatment.

Informed consentA conversation about what is proposed, why, the risks, the benefits, the alternatives, and what happens if you decline — followed by your agreement.

Patient rightsRights commonly include respectful care, information you can understand, participation in decisions, refusal of treatment, interpreter services, and a way to raise concerns.

Medical records and HIPAAYou generally have the right to see and get a copy of your own medical records.
