Timing that matters

Complaints to OCR should generally be filed within 180 days of the problem.

130 days is the standard deadline; one 30-day extension requires a written reason.
2Fees must be reasonable and cost-based — labor for copying, supplies, and postage.
3You cannot be charged a search or retrieval fee for access to your own record.
4Records cannot be withheld because of an unpaid medical bill.
5If you are refused or over-charged, file with HHS Office for Civil Rights.
